Govinda - The Entertainer No.1

He’s funny, he’s colourful, he’s Govinda aka Chi Chi. An inimitable dancer, an actor who can spring tears in your eyes or have you laugh till you cry, he has nailed it and nailed it good.

Basics on Govinda
A Sagittarian, Govinda was born on 21st December 1963 in Vihar, Thane, Mumbai. He was named Govind Arun Ahuja. His father was a Punjabi Arun Kumar Ahuja, who was an actor in the forties. His mother Nirmala came from Banaras and was a classical singer and dancer. She was also an actress and was cast opposite his father in the movie Savera and they got married in 1941. His father’s attempt at producing a movie failed after which he faced some health issues and the family moved to Virar.

Several relatives are in the movie business like his sister Kaamini Khanna, his brother Kirti Kumar besides nephews and nieces.

Govinda was rumoured to be interested in his co-star Neelam but he married Sunita in 1987. She was his maternal uncle Anand Singh’s wife’s sister. They have two children Narmada and Yashvardhan.

Govinda studied Commerce at the Annasaheb Vartak College. He developed a passion for dance after watching the movie Saturday Night Fever. He began circulating a tape and soon bagged a fertilizer ad followed by one for Allwyn.

He hosted the television show Jeeto Chappard Phaad ke on Sony Entertainment Television in 2001. He also has to his credit the 2007 Most Stylish Comeback Award at the MTV Lycra Style Awards. And took the tenth place in a survey conducted by BBC News Online to find the Top 10 Greatest Stars of Stage and Screen in the last 1000 years.

Govinda in Politics
Govinda is a supported of the Congress Party. He was a Member of Parliament for Mumbai North, India in 2004.He won the seat with 50000 votes. He quit politics in 2008.

Govinda’s Movies
1986 to 1990  Govinda’s first movie was Ilzaam in 1986 with Neelam that became a big hit. Love 86 released later that year was also a success. He acted in movies like Khudgarz (1987), Hatya (1988), Do Qaidi (1989) and Izzatdaar (1990).

1991 to 1995  He worked with Amitabh Bacchan in Hum (1991). He paired up with director David Dhawan in Shola Aur Shabnam (1992) and played the role of Michael Corleone in Zulm Ki Hukumat (1992) that was inspired by The Godfather. In 1993, his movie David Dhawan’s comedy Aankhen with Govinda in a double role became one of the biggest hits of the year.

He had another hit in his hands with Dhawan’s Raja Babu (1994) with Karishma Kapoor. He acted with Karishma Kapoor in Dulaara, Khuddar and Prem Shakti in 1994.

1996 to 2000  Gambler, Hathkadi, Andolan, Coolie No 1 were his releases in 1996. He acted in the remake of Rajnikanth’s Veera, Saajan Chale Sasural that was another directorial venture of David Dhawan. Govinda joined hands with Amitabh Bacchan in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998). Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999) with Sanjay Dutt won him a Filmfare Best Comedian Award. He took a villainous role in Shikari (2000). He worked with Rani Mukherji in Hadh Kar Dhi Aapne (2000).

2001 to 2005  He acted in several movies, a few of which were, Jodi No.1 (2001), Chalo Ishq Ladaaye (2002), Raja Bhaiyya (2003) and Khullam Khulla Pyaar Karenge (2005).

2006 to 2009  Govinda moved away from the screens for a while as he got involved in politics, made a comeback in Bhagam Bhag (2006). David Dhawan’s Partner (2007) cast him with Salman Khan and became one of the biggest hits of the year. Money Ho Tho Honey Hai (2008) was below average.

Govinda was a gifted dancer and thought that he could get a place beside Mithun Chakraborty in Hindi films. All his earlier films focused on his dancing abilities.

Chi Chi, as he is popularly known, emerged as an actor in Hatya. People noticed the talent in Govinda and he started getting better offers. The shift however came with David Dhawan's Aankhein. Govinda's image went for a complete overhaul.

Till the release of Aankhein not many were aware of this actor's flair for comedy. Govinda never looked back since then. He instituted himself as the actor 'No. 1'.
He had a narrow escape from death on January 5, 1994. While travelling to a studio for the shooting of 'Khuddar (1994)' , the actor's car hit another car, resulting in him sustaining injuries to his head. Though bleeding profusely, Govinda did not cancel the shooting. After visiting a doctor, he shot for the film till midnight.
He has acted in over 140 Hindi films.
Govinda played a negative role for the first time in Shikari which was released in 2000. Although the movie was not a commercial success, his convincing portrayal of a villain was critically acclaimed.
